In the Living Matter Studio taught by guest professors Leyla Yunis and Ondrej Kyjanek students looked into natural structures and processes and used biomimetics as a tool in creating innovative objects and concepts.

PUR TAP – Group Klee – Florian Post, Lukas Braun, Mohamad Alweis

PUR TAP is a water purifier made of bio materials for daily use. It removes residues of heavy metals and chemicals from tap water to make the CO2 emissions caused by plastic bottles unnecessary. The slip-casted filter is made out of clay and charcoal. When fired, the charcoal burns out and leaves fine pores that are also able to filter bacteria and viruses. As the water needs to go through the surface in order to get filtered, we increased the surface 75% to accelerate the process. The filter is able to purify up to 700ml per hour.

FORMAZIONE ABITABILE – Group Sunflower – Juliana Ludwig, Peter Sorg

Shaped through a generative process, Formatione abitabile is a series of autonomous mineral formations which are entering into dialogue with the specific environmental circumstances of their location. They are creating their own inhabitable small scale ecosystems by collecting and emitting solar thermal energy and rainwater, the two basic requirements for all life on earth.

MoPRO – Group Potato – Pauline Frei, Tobias Schenk

The conceptual bike helmet MoPRO breaks new ground in several aspects. As a sustainable alternative to conventional helmets, which are made of a variety of different inseparable plastics, MoPRO consistent recyclable follows the 100% monomaterial approach – so the product can be economically recycled in one piece. Functionally, the helmet focuses on the widest possible application: it is designed to fit any head size. The balancing act between adjustability, safety, comfort and resource efficiency is made possible by a novel air cushion inside the helmet shell, which at the same time acts as an adjustment mechanism and cushioning in the case of a crash. The size can be adjusted by a pump bellow integrated into the helmet.

VERBUNDENESETWAS – Group Leek – Luisa Beyer, Theresa Nürk

Our project „Verbundenesetwas“ is about strengthening regional crafts by creating an interdisciplinary collaboration between us, the designers and especially 2 different and at the same time local craftsmen. The goal is to preserve the intangible cultural heritage of craftsmanship while creating a space for community and exchange. A network between regional craft disciplines that benefits from each other and works together for a more sustainable product world through longevity. Because the good, of the regional craftsmen is carried out into the world to show people: Behind a product are people and knowledge that spans generations, passed on through the years of practice of the craftsmen. To strengthen the individual creativity, the people behind it and their effectiveness, is for us the interface between traditional craftsmanship and industrial design.

POLYGREENS – Group Baobab – Anna Vogelsang, Genita Preniqi, Samuel Stober

Polygreens is a sustainable nature inspired modular indoor planting system which bings fresh supplements as Microgreens in our homes to support mental health and good nutrition. The system helps to develop a tighter relation with the microgreens and to integrate them easily for longterm in their daily life. Polygreens consists of several parts that all form a perfect portion for a person. The clay moduls allows to play and arrange them depending of mood, need or space. The clay helps to keep the seeds moistured and works as a natural water indicator.

FLEC – Group Mimosa – Elena Ahlgrim, Lan Xin Zhang, Laura Neuscheler

Flec is a multifunctional device able to protect from the sun and to increase the quality of the light in a room. Through reflecting lamellas that can rotate Flec can project natural light inside a room and distribute it more evenly. As a result mental and physical health are increased and less artificial light is needed.
